Felt really comfortable with the counsellor, who was awesome! Felt safe to speak the truth without being judged.

What is NaNoWriMo?

Thursday, November 7, 2013

You may have heard that Nexus Youth Services is offering a writing group on Tuesdays during the month of November, but what you may not know is that it was inspired by a movement called National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo.

What is NaNoWriMo? That’s a great question …

Started in 1999, NaNoWriMo is an annual creative writing project that takes place every November. Participants from around the world challenge themselves to write 50,000 words (approximately the length of a novella) between November 1st and 30th. In its first year, NaNoWriMo had only 21 participants; today, over 200,000 people from around the world take part in the challenge.

The point of NaNoWriMo is not to write the perfect novel. The point is to get the creative juices following and get some words down on paper – you can worry about editing things later! If you’re a writer looking for a challenge, or simply want to try something new, then come to the Nexus Youth Centre on Tuesdays in November from 6-8pm for our creative writing group. There you’ll meet other young writers like yourself, get writing tips and encourage each other to make it to the finish line. No experience necessary!

You can learn more about this group by calling the Nexus Youth Centre at 905-566-1883.
